How to Fade Dark Spots

The two most common causes of dark spots are melasma and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Melasma is typically brought on by hormonal changes (such as pregnancy) in combination with sun exposure. But men can get it too. It’s when you have dark splotches on your skin in areas that are sun exposed. PIH refers to the dark marks you get after any kind of inflammation—the spots that linger after pimples, rashes, cuts, scrapes and burns. It also occurs as a result of friction—between your thighs from them rubbing together or anywhere you chronically scratch.
Now let’s talk about dark spot treatments. The most common treatment for melasma is hydroquinone cream. You need a prescription for this. If you don’t have health insurance you can use an online service such as Nurx or Musely for a lot less than a doctor visit. Hydroquinone should be applied sparingly only to the dark patches. It can also be used for PIH but since it only goes onto the affected area it isn’t practical for things like acne scars.
If prescription hydroquinone isn’t an option there are other products to remove dark spots that are inexpensive and easy to buy online. Years ago I worked for a celebrity doctor in Manhattan. Her go-to treatment for melasma was glycolic acid peels. You can find acid peels, lotions and creams on Amazon for a relatively low price. Take your pick, but start off cautiously because glycolic acid can be potentially irritating. A lot of these treatments aren’t meant for everyday use so be sure to read the directions. Glycolic acid also works great for PIH, especially acne scars.
The best skin brightening ingredients besides hydroquinone and glycolic acid are kojic acid and azelaic acid. Glycolic acid and kojic acid are AHAs. Azelaic acid is a BHA. Generally speaking, AHAs are stronger. The Ordinary makes a lot of quality products, many of which are under ten dollars. Their AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution is very effective. It can be used on your entire face as it also helps with acne, pores and wrinkles. Be sure to read the directions and start off with caution.
